Asian market market

On Wednesday, as the United States reached an agreement with more trading partners, the market risk aversion cooled down. The US dollar index is still weak, and as of now, the US dollar is priced at 97.14.

Summary of the fundamentals of the foreign exchange market

1. Tariffs

① EU officials said that the US benchmark tariff on EU goods was 15%. The White House responded: Trump had speculated before the announcement.

②The EU is preparing to impose a 30% tariff on US goods worth 100 billion euros without an agreement. US Treasury Secretary Besent: EU's retaliation preparation measures are a negotiating strategy.

③ It is reported that U.S. federal prosecutors are laying the foundation for criminal charges against eouu.cnpanies and individuals who try to evade U.S. tariffs.

④The United States will enter the final stage of an anti-dumping investigation into some steel imports.

Mitsubishi UF: The European Central Bank still has room for at least one rate cut

The European Central Bank (ECB) will keep interest rates unchanged at this week's meeting after seven consecutive rate cuts. The current deposit rate is 2.0%, which is at the median of the 1.75-2.25% range announced by the European Central Bank earlier this year. Therefore, the threshold for further interest rate cuts seems to be high.

European Central Bank President Lagarde previously emphasized that he is in a good state, with the current policy neutral and the inflation rate accurately meeting the standards (the final HICP value in June was 2.0%). Although oil prices are slightly higher than the ECB's last forecast, the impact of inflation is likely to be offset by the strengthening of the euro. Recent economic data are generally hawkish, industrial output in May eased concerns about a sharp slowdown, and the German ZEW survey was also optimistic, but since there is still a high degree of uncertainty in trade relations between Europe and the United States, it should not be too optimistic.

The key to the current European and American trade negotiations is whether the EU can accept the imbalanced results that are biased towards the United States? Or will Trump tolerate EU countermeasures without further raising taxes? As the negotiation deadline on August 1 approaches, the agreement is implemented with little room for implementation and high risks. This is a key factor in our prediction that the ECB will further lower its policy interest rate to 1.5% in the future. If a positive result is achieved (such as US tariffs reduced to 10%), the rate cut expectations may be withdrawn.

But no matter what the outcome of the trade negotiations, we think the ECB will have room for at least one more rate cut. Key data including the second-quarter GDP growth data that could slow sharply and wage growth will be released before the September meeting. If the overall inflation rate (as expected in July/August) is lower than the target again, policy makers will find it harder to explain the anti-inflation process by energy/exchange factor alone. Although Germany will introduce large-scale fiscal stimulus, the situation in the euro zone's second largest economy is very different.

Mitsubishi UF: The Bank of Japan may not raise interest rates this year, and will emphasize the downside risks of...

Recently, several media reported thatThe Bank of Japan may raise its core CPI forecast for fiscal year 2025 (FY25) at its July monetary policy meeting. In the Economic Forecast of the April meeting, the Bank of Japan's core CPI forecasts for fiscal years 2025-2027 were 2.2%, 1.7%, and 1.9% respectively; and by July, economists expect the average core CPI in Japan to be about 2.51% in fiscal year 2025. The main reason for the forecast was that food prices such as rice prices rose beyond expectations and the situation in the Middle East pushed up oil prices. Policy member Shunko Oda recently mentioned that food prices were stronger than expected.

It is only the time point when the Bank of Japan is likely to not achieve its potential inflation target of 2% ahead of schedule. Reuters expects it to reiterate that its core CPI will approach the price stability target in fiscal 2027. The central bank will pay attention to the impact of rising food prices on households' long-term inflation expectations, while continuing to emphasize the downward risks of the economy.

In terms of monetary policy, it is expected that the meeting from July 30 to 31 will remain unchanged (the market has not priced interest rate hikes). Previously, due to the adjustment of US reciprocal tariffs, the April meeting lowered the baseline forecast of the economy and price; after the US and China temporarily lowered tariffs in May, cautious sentiment eased, but the July branch manager meeting pointed out that although the economy is resilient (partially due to grabbing demand), the outlook is highly uncertain. Therefore, the baseline scenario of the Economic Forecast at this meeting is expected to remain unchanged, and uncertainty and downside risks are still emphasized.

We maintain the previous monetary policy scenario: the Bank of Japan is expected to raise the policy interest rate to 0.75% in January 2026 and to 1.00% in July 2026. We need to confirm the impact of tariffs on the real economy and the corporate salary increase plan for wage negotiations next spring. The risk is: if there is an unexpected result between the US and Japan trade negotiations, the time point for interest rate hikes may change.

Deutsche Bank: Fired Powell will not save too much debt costs

U.S. President Trump last month used federal debt costs as a new reason to urge Powell to cut interest rates. But a new analysis shows that firing the Fed chairman and forcing it to lower interest rates will not help. Matthew Luzzetti, chief U.S. economist at Deutsche Bank, wrote that the removal of Powell would not change the Treasury interest cost.
