GBP/USD rises as UK jobs data eases pressure on the Bank of England, Fed dovish resurfaces

The pound/dollar rose 0.21% to 1.3442 during the North American period, as economic data on both sides of the Atlantic are scarce. Weak data released by the U.S. slightly boosted the dollar, although the pair traded at 1.3442 after hitting a daily low of 1.3406.

GBP/USD climbed to 1.3442 as U.S. sentiment improves but inflation expectations slows, support for the hope of a rate cut in July

Preliminary readings from the University of Michigan Consumer Confidence Index show that Americans are slightly optimistic, with the index rising to 61.8 from 60 in June. Inflation expectations were lowered, with inflation expectations in the next five years being 3.6%, lower than 4%; while inflation expectations for the next year are 4.4%, lower than 5% last month.

Consumers are unlikely to recover confidence in the economy unless they are convinced that inflation is unlikely to worsen, such as if trade policy remains stable for the foreseeable future."

Federal Director Christopher Waller said he supports a rate cut in July, although he mentioned that the Fed needs to rely on data. Chicago Federal Reserve President Ostan Goulsby said he was "a bit cautious" about it, as the latest CPI data shows taxes are driving up eouu.cnmodity inflation.

At the same time, economic data in the UK is scarce. However, the latest employment report was slightly better than expected, with employment in May rising from -109K to -25K, alleviating concerns about a weak labor market. This is a relief for the Bank of England (BoE) as it is still coping with high price pressures and inflation remains above the 3% threshold.

Next week, the UK economic schedule will include S&P Global Express PMI and retail sales data. In the United States, traders will focus on housing data, newsletter PMI and durable goods orders.

GBP/USD Price Forecast: Technical Outlook

GBP/USD continues to trade sideways, slightly bullish, and if the pair breaks through the key resistance of 50-day Simple Moving Average (SMA) 1.3506, it may prompt buyers to enter. If the breakthrough is made, the next target will be SMA 1.3577 on the 20th, followed by 1.3600. Conversely, if GBP/USD falls below 1.3400, the first support will be the June 23 low of 1.3369, followed by the 100-day SMA1.3287.
