Mexican peso rose as inflation exceeded expectations, but U.S. risks remain

The Mexican Peso (MXN) strengthened against the US dollar (USD) on Thursday, supported by higher-than-expected inflation data in mid-May. This data prompted investors to reconsider the timeline for further rate cuts by the Bank of Mexico, resulting in increased demand for peso, causing the US dollar/Mexican peso (USD/MXN) to fall below its 20-day simple moving average (SMA), trading around 19.3096 at the time of writing.
At the same time, U.S. dynamics continue to exert a significant impact on the short-term trend of the pair. While inflation gradually aligns with the Fed’s 2% target, the dollar has weakened due to broader concerns, including a downgrade in credit rating, a worsening sentiment and the passage of President Trump’s “a beautiful big bill.”
These developments jointly put pressure on the dollar, strengthening the peso's strength, especially Mexico's monetary policy seems to be more dependent on data than doves.
Mexican peso Technical Analysis: USD/MXN faces deeper risk of loss below 19.30, as bearish pressure increases
USD/MXN further declined after failing to maintain above the 10-day simple moving average (SMA), and currently forms short-term resistance around 19.4080.
The currency pair is trading around 19.3096, and bearish momentum is accumulating. If the closing price decisively below 19.30, a deeper support may be exposed, at the low of 19.11 in early May, followed by a swing low of 19.00 in October 2024.
Relative Strength Index (RSI) has entered the neutral-bearish zone, indicating that unless the bulls re-control at 19.46 above the 10th and 20th SMA, otherwise it may fall further.
The short-term bias is towards further downward trend below this level.
However, if shorts gain momentum below 19.300, the May low is close to 19.235 and the continued weakness in the US dollar may push sellers toward the October low of 19.111.
At the same time, the relative strength index (RSI) indicator is still below the neutral area of 50.
The current bearish trend remains unchanged as the 30 level is seen as a potential oversold area.
If the price falls below 19.20, it may open the door to the October low of about 19.11, paving the way for the 19.00 mark.
On the other hand, if the dollar rebounds strongly and prices break through the downtrend line, USD/MXN may retest the April low near 19.47, bringing the 20th SMA to 19.53.
