Gold prices plummeted more than 4% this week as risk sentiment improves

Gold prices fell more than 1.50% on Friday and are expected to end this week with a decline of more than 4% as market sentiment improves investors to sell precious metals and turn to risky assets. As of writing, gold/USD was trading at $3,187, hitting a high of $3,252 intraday.
Gold started at a low start early this week due to news of a deal to ease the U.S.-China trade war and reduce tariffs by 115%. U.S. economic data shows that gold/USD has traded in the $3,120 to $3,265 range over the past four days, but ultimately the buyer appears to have lost momentum.
Earlier, data from the University of Michigan showed that American households’ perceptions of the economy became pessimistic, reflected in the May consumer confidence survey. Inflation expectations are biased towards upward. Early housing data showed mixed performance, and import prices rose.
After the data was released, gold prices cut some losses as market participants expected the Fed to relax by more than 55 basis points. However, as they digest all the data, U.S. Treasury yields recovered earlier losses and the dollar turned higher.
This is because this week's U.S. economic data suggests that the deflation process continues to make progress. Nonetheless, Fed officials remained cautious about easing policies, pointing out uncertainties in trade policies and tariffs and their potential impact on inflation.
In terms of growth, retail sales continued to slow in April, but the latest update from the Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank of China GDPNow shows that the U.S. economy is likely to grow at a rate of 2.4% in the second quarter of 2025.
Next week, the U.S. economic schedule will include a series of speeches from Fed officials, along with flash PMI and housing data, which will be closely watched.
XAU/USD Technical Outlook: Double-top Risk is Negative
As I wrote yesterday, "If the buyer fails to achieve the daily closing above $3,200, the rebound of gold may be short-lived." Although this goal was achieved, the seller intervened and dragged gold/USD below this level, confirming that the "double-top" pattern is still in play. Momentum is biased toward a further downward trend as the Relative Strength Index (RSI) remains bearish.
So if gold/USD stays below $3,200, the next support will be the 50-day simple moving average (SMA) at $3,155, followed by $3,100. Conversely, if gold breaks through $3,200, the next resistance will be the May 14 high of $3,257, followed by $3,300.
